Why does the machine on the refrigerator go off at night?

The refrigerator turns on and turns off after a few seconds: possible causes and solutions

A refrigerator is an indispensable appliance in every home. The breakdown of such necessary equipment causes great inconvenience. During operation, the refrigerator motor does not work constantly, but periodically turns on and off, and this is the norm.

Depending on the selected mode, the periods of work and rest are different. But when the refrigerator turns on and turns off after a few seconds, this clearly indicates that it is broken.

Depending on the cause of the breakdown, repairs can be done either at home or by seeking help from a qualified technician.

Why does the refrigerator turn off quickly?

The problem - the refrigerator turns on and then turns off after a few seconds - can be caused by several reasons, including:

  1. Voltage drop or stable low voltage in the network.
  2. A malfunction that has occurred in the start-up relay (it may have broken or burned out).
  3. Problems, breakdown in the electronic board (only in modern units).
  4. The compressor, the part that is responsible for the movement of refrigerant through the cooling system, has broken down.

To determine the cause of the breakdown, you can listen to the sound when the refrigerator turns on and immediately turns off. For example, if the device works for only a couple of seconds, and then turns off with a loud click, then most likely the problem is a malfunction of the compressor or the start-up relay that starts the motor.

If the duration of the refrigerator operation intervals is violated, it is worth checking the electronic unit of the refrigerator. It may give incorrect signals about turning on and off.

To correct the breakdown, it is necessary to find out the reason for this behavior of the unit.

Power grid instability

To begin with, you should exclude such a banal reason as a voltage drop. It is enough to turn on the incandescent lamp and monitor its operation.

If the lamp blinks and the light intensity slowly changes (it becomes dimmer and then brighter), then the reason that the refrigerator turns on and turns off after a few seconds is insufficient voltage in the network. In this case, it is necessary to disconnect the equipment from the network to avoid its breakdown.

If fluctuations occur frequently, then you should think about network filters, stabilizers, fuses, or installing a transformer and optimizing the supply of electricity to the premises.

The start relay is malfunctioning

In refrigerators of older models and units of domestic manufacturers, the compressor motor is controlled by a start-protection relay.

Its main function is to regulate the operation of the motor, turning it on and off at a certain time interval so that the motor does not overheat. If the relay breaks down, the refrigerator turns on and after a few seconds turns off randomly.

Such a malfunction can be determined by visual inspection of the disassembled part. This type of breakdown is common and easy to fix.

The start-up protection relay is inexpensive, so replacing it will not cost the owner of the refrigeration equipment.

Compressor broke

If everything is normal with the voltage and the start relay, you should check the “heart” of the refrigerator. Compressor failure is also common, but replacing this part will be costly.

If the refrigerator is old, a better solution would be to purchase a new unit. But if the owner is sorry to part with an old friend, then replacing the compressor will be quite expensive.

The compressor is the most important part of the refrigerator. It pumps out freon, which is in a gaseous state, from the evaporator and supplies it to the condenser under pressure. The gas is compressed and cooled, turning into a liquid state. In its liquid state, freon again enters the evaporator and absorbs heat.

The refrigerator does not work without a compressor. To determine the health of the compressor, it is enough to measure the resistance of its windings. If the device shows the nominal value, then the reason is different. Compressor failure can be caused by damage to the winding, a short circuit between its turns, or jamming of the motor.

In this case, the motor continues to operate, but with increased load, which leads to overheating. In turn, when the motor overheats, the relay turns it off, which causes the refrigerator to turn on and then turn off after a few seconds.

The compressor is not repaired; to resolve the problem, replacement of this part is required.

The electronic control unit is malfunctioning

In modern refrigerators, when diagnosing, attention should be paid to the electronic board (electronic unit). In the age of technology, household appliances are increasingly equipped with electronic boards. With their help, the refrigerator is turned on and off.

If the electronics are broken, commands begin to arrive haphazardly, so a situation may arise when the refrigerator turns on and immediately turns off. What to do in this case? The malfunction of this board may consist of a defect in soldering during production, condensation on the electronic unit, etc.

Such a breakdown can only be detected through a complete diagnosis using specific equipment. The electronic unit may need flashing for further operation, or it may need to be replaced.

Conclusion

If the refrigerator turns on and turns off after a few seconds, there may be different reasons. You can try to eliminate them yourself, for example, replace the relay, or arrange for the supply of electrical energy at sufficient voltage.

In more complex cases, when special knowledge and skills are required to repair a breakdown, it is better to invite an experienced technician.

It has all the necessary equipment and spare parts for diagnosing and repairing household appliances, and will also provide a guarantee on spare parts and work performed.

The refrigerator breaks plugs when turned on, reasons

Refrigerator repair in Moscow and the region

You turn on the new refrigerator, and then surprise - the plugs are knocked out? Sometimes the refrigerator knocks out the machine due to network overload (many different appliances are turned on), but sometimes this is a sign of a breakdown.

At the slightest sign of wiring faults, do not hesitate, call a technician immediately! And let's try to figure out all the other reasons right now.

Why do the plugs pop out when I turn on the refrigerator?

A fairly common phenomenon is observed when turning on household appliances: the light begins to flash or the plugs completely knock out. What causes this? There are several main reasons.

It should be noted that there are situations when the plugs are knocked out, but there are no faults in the refrigerator. Below are some of them.

  • Old wiring in the apartment/house.

If the wiring has not been changed for a long time, that is, it was installed a couple of decades ago, then the new refrigeration unit can put such a load on it that the wiring simply cannot withstand. Accordingly, there will be a power outage from the panel.

In this case, you need to contact an electrician to replace the wiring.

  • Connecting several devices to the network at once.

For example, your LCD TV is turned on, and then you plug the refrigerator into another outlet - it will knock out the plugs. The reason is the same - network overload. What to do? Contact an electrician. Important! If up to this point the network has withstood such a load, and then suddenly there is a sharp short circuit, immediately turn off the power to the apartment. Only after this, contact the electricity service and the appropriate specialists.

  • There is a fault in the cord/plug of the cooling unit.

Shorted contacts or a melted wire plug is a reason to contact an electrician. Don't joke with electricity, it's life-threatening.

If the socket is faulty, not only the switched-on refrigerator will knock out the plugs, but also a simple iron. Now is the time to check the outlet and repair it.

However, there are cases when everything is in order with the wiring, the plug and cord are intact, but the plugs fly out every time the unit is turned on. The cause may be an internal malfunction of the refrigerator. The breakdown of some parts can lead to such consequences that the refrigerator will systematically knock out the RCD (residual current device) during operation.

    Malfunction of the motor-compressor.

If this malfunction occurs, immediately when you try to turn on the refrigerator, the machine will trip. The most common reason for this is a short circuit in the compressor winding.

The solution is to replace the old motor with a new one.

  • The start protection relay has failed.
  • It manifests itself by knocking out plugs and an audible click before turning off the lights. Most often, the relay does not perform its direct function.

The solution is to replace the old relay with a new one.

What should I do if the light blinks when I turn on the refrigerator?

First of all, turn off the power to this device. Under no circumstances try to reconnect the device to the network - you risk receiving a severe electric shock, or even worse - causing a fire.

Check the wiring, particularly the outlet, for any burning odors and contact a refrigeration repair service or electrician.

What repairs will be needed if the plugs break when the refrigerator is turned on?

Possible actions that the technician will take if the problem is hidden inside the refrigerator:

  • Repairing and re-soldering contacts/wiring inside the refrigerator,
  • Replacing the main control board,
  • Reinstalling control panel buttons,
  • Replacing a faulty evaporator heating element with a new one,
  • Relay replacement,
  • Replacing the motor-compressor.

Why does the automatic circuit breaker work when connecting a refrigerator? – Electro Help

If immediately after turning on or some time after the start of operation, the refrigerator motor turned off, all the indicators on its body went out, and in general the apartment became somehow suspiciously quiet and dark - the TV or radio went silent, the lights went out in all the rooms, then you are probably , realized that this had knocked out the traffic jams. If you turned on the machine, but when the refrigerator started operating, the electricity turned off again, then it is he who becomes the first among the “suspects” of losing power to the apartment. However, do not rush to conclusions; perhaps the reason for the sudden onset of darkness is not related to a breakdown of the refrigerator. Check the following.

Situations when the refrigerator knocks out the machine, but there is no breakdown

  • When connecting a new refrigerator to the network. In this case, the problem could have arisen from the wiring, the use of faulty electrical protection devices, or due to errors in the design of the electrical panel. For example, very often old Soviet electrical panels are not designed for the number of electrical appliances that we use now. As a result, the new additional device causes an overload of the electrical network. In this situation, you need to seek help from an electrician.
  • Simultaneous inclusion of several powerful electrical appliances . Not every machine can handle a working hairdryer, a boiler heating water, an iron on, or a boiling kettle. In this situation, starting the refrigerator motor will be quite enough to turn off the power to the apartment. However, if the power grid could previously withstand such a load, then, undoubtedly, it is worth sounding the alarm!
  • There is a problem with the refrigerator plug or cord . Sometimes it may be visible without opening the plug, for example if it has melted or turned black. In other cases, it will need to be opened and, if a breakdown is detected, replaced. It is better to entrust all these procedures to an electrician.
  • There is a fault in the socket where the refrigerator is connected. To make sure that this is the case, try connecting another electrical appliance to it, for example, one that is no less “gluttonous” than a refrigerator, kettle or iron. If the machine kicks out again, then the problem is definitely in the socket.

If you have had this refrigerator for a long time, when examining its plug and cord, no defects were found, the socket is working properly, and the network is not overloaded with the number of connected devices, then most likely your refrigerator needs professional diagnostics and repair.

To finally make sure that the problem really lies in the refrigerator, try turning off all electrical appliances in the house and turning off the lights. If under such conditions the machine goes off again, then the problem is definitely in the refrigerator.

The most common refrigerator breakdowns that cause the machine to break out

The table below shows the most common breakdowns of refrigerators, as a result of which the plugs in the apartment can be knocked out.

*The table shows FULL PRICES for repairs, taking into account the cost of new components and specialist work. The cost of repairs depends on the brand and model of the refrigerator and is determined by the technician after diagnosis.

What to do if the refrigerator knocks out the machine?

According to safety precautions, under no circumstances should you use an electrical appliance that knocks out plugs. Necessary:

  • disconnect the unit from the network
  • call a technician

However, the refrigerator is a special unit in this sense, because if it is turned off before the technician arrives, all the products stored inside can spoil. Therefore, there is a temporary option that can be used.

However, it will only help if it knocks out the RCD due to leakage current and provided that the refrigerator was operating from a grounded outlet. In this case, cover the grounding contacts of the outlet with electrical tape.

Most likely, the plugs will stop knocking out after this, but the leakage current will accumulate on the body of the refrigerator, and when you touch it, the unit may “shock” with current.

Attention! If you temporarily decide to use this method, then before touching the refrigerator (for example, to open the door), always disconnect it from the electrical outlet.

Do not use this method if there are children or pets in the house. This could be life-threatening!

If a machine in your apartment breaks down, do not ignore this problem. This can lead to fire or electric shock, which is fatal to the lives of all occupants! If your refrigerator malfunctions, contact RemBytTech specialists:

The refrigerator breaks plugs when turned on, reasons

When you turn on the refrigerator, does the plug break? As soon as the motor started running, did you suddenly notice that the display and lights on the refrigerator went out, and the room became unusually quiet?

The machine doesn’t just knock out; there is a malfunction that needs to be fixed. This could happen immediately after the equipment was turned on to the network or after a certain time. We will look at what caused the problem in this article.

Why does the refrigerator knock out plugs when you turn it on?

An RCD fuse is installed specifically to preserve equipment that consumes a lot of electricity. Expensive household appliances must be installed correctly, and their electronics must be protected from power surges. Therefore, if the RCD breaks when starting the refrigerator, there is a problem.

The reason is not necessarily a breakdown of the refrigerator components. Look, maybe a similar situation happened to you:

  1. You have connected new refrigeration equipment. This is all due to network overload: old wiring, unprepared Soviet-made electrical panels are not ready to withstand the voltage of modern devices. Therefore, it is necessary to replace the wiring or install new network protection systems.
  2. Several devices are connected to the network. Do you remember what power machine you installed? Exceeding the installed power in the network leads to the protection being disabled. Therefore, turn off one of the devices.
  3. Broken plugs or power cords are serious. Shorted contacts pose a possible fire risk, so it is recommended to contact an electrician. You also need to check the socket for serviceability.

Overvoltage protection for the refrigerator - protecting equipment from breakdowns. However, if it turns off, replacing the machine will not help. We need to look for the reason for this behavior.

What faults lead to power outages?

If you checked the wiring and power cord, but did not find any damage, the reason may be a serious malfunction of the components of the Nord, Atlant or other brand refrigerator.

Malfunction of the motor-compressor

A voltage drop in the network can short-circuit the motor winding. You can determine that the cause is a compressor malfunction if the plugs pop out immediately after starting the engine. Checking the winding with a multimeter will help you verify the problem. To do this, multimeter probes are applied to the contacts and windings of the compressor. Resistance may vary depending on the manufacturer's brand.

If the winding resistance is 0, then you need to replace the motor. This is quite a serious repair, so it is better to call a specialist.

Start relay failure

The start-up protection relay is used to supply voltage to the windings of the refrigerator motor. When you connect the equipment to the power supply, the machine will immediately knock out, and you will hear a characteristic click. Unfortunately, the relay cannot be repaired, so a new part is installed.

Malfunction of the evaporator heating element

The No Frost defrosting system is equipped with a heater that may have failed. As soon as the heater is turned on, the overvoltage protection is immediately turned off. After the electricity is supplied, the refrigerator will work, but as soon as the heating element turns on, the electricity will turn off again. The element will need to be replaced.

What other breakdowns lead to a power outage:

  • The key contacts on the panel are burnt out. As a result of combustion or contact closure, the RCD is knocked out. You may notice that the keys on the panel have started to melt.
  • The same thing happens when the electronic board malfunctions.

Surge protection for refrigerator

Protection against surges in the network for household appliances is used in the form of an RCD or grounding sockets.

You need to be careful when choosing, because the machine may be of poor quality. If you come across a fake that is assembled from third-rate plastic and skimps on details, then it will not work for long. After two operations, the machine deteriorates, so that even when a low-power device is turned on, it begins to turn off. Then you need to install a new machine.

If you notice that when connecting the refrigeration equipment, the shield has been knocked out or the light in the room is blinking, do not try to connect the equipment again. This can be dangerous, because it threatens not only an electric shock, but also a fire. Therefore, if you notice a problem, call a repairman or electrician.

Why does the ouzo work without load?

RCD - residual current device . Many have probably heard, and someone may know what this device is, what it is for and how it works. Without delving too much into the jungle of physics, we will briefly try to understand the structure and operating principles of this very RCD in simple human language.

So, as the name suggests, this device is designed to protect against electric shock .

The operating principle of the device is based on comparing the currents along the conductors at the input and output of the device. The currents must be equal.

If there is a slight difference, the device “sees” it and immediately disconnects the load from the network. The response time, according to standards, should be no more than 15-25 ms.

For example, if an insulation breakdown occurs on the body, and it does not matter whether it is a phase wire or a neutral wire, in any case, when a person touches the body of the device, current will leak through the person’s body, to which the RCD will immediately respond and turn off the damaged device, thereby saving a person's life. Here is, perhaps, the simplest and most understandable example, for a person far from physics.

Now, in fact, we will begin to review the reasons due to which, in practice, the RCD is triggered.

As we found out earlier, the RCD is triggered when current leakage occurs . Cracks in the insulation of worn-out wires in older buildings can cause this type of leakage. In this case, the activation of the protection prevents the occurrence of a fire.

What to do in this case? There is only one answer - look for a possible place of current leakage . You can, of course, get by with simpler methods, for example, simply eliminating the RCD from the circuit, but no one knows what this will lead to.

The wiring can last for decades, but it can also lead to disaster. And electricity, as you know, does not like jokes and does not forgive negligence.

In addition to wear and tear on the wires, the tripping of an RCD often causes wear and tear, and therefore breakdown of insulation in household appliances. For example, sometimes old refrigerators, washing machines, etc. can cause the RCD to trip.

Sometimes, in 50% of cases, manipulation of the plug and socket helps to get rid of the RCD triggering, that is, simply turn the plug over in the socket.

Recently, at the request of the Distribution Zone, after the metering device, i.e. meter, in private houses, apartments, an RCD is installed for the entire house, apartment, with an operating current of 100 mA.

As a rule, if everything is in order with the wiring, the protection does not work, but if somewhere there is a current leak of more than 100 mA, the RCD will let you know.

How to determine where this leak is? First, turn off all devices. If the problem is not in the devices, you will have to tackle the wiring.

Having identified the faulty group, begin an inspection of sockets, lamps, and dose boxes. Most often the cause is an insulation breakdown or improper installation of electrical wiring. sockets, lamps.

Sometimes some would-be electricians combine ground and neutral in the sockets themselves, supposedly to protect against electric shock, all the same, they say, in a switchboard or at a substation the neutral is connected to ground. And this is strictly prohibited.

The refrigerator knocks out the plugs or the machine. What to do - Remontol

November 16, 2019Viktor Sidelnikov 2,607

The refrigerator knocks out the plugs or the machine immediately after being plugged into the network. In what cases does this happen? What are the reasons for this and what is the danger of such a situation? How to avoid serious problems? We will answer all these and some other questions in our article.

How does this happen

Sometimes we can observe such a picture. When we plug in the refrigerator, we hear a click, after which the light in the entire apartment goes out. The circuit breaker on the panel is triggered. We turn off the refrigerator, turn on the machine - when we turn it on again, everything repeats again.

If this situation repeats every time you turn it on, then you need to think about it and pay attention to the following. The reason for a sudden loss of electricity in an apartment is not always associated with a breakdown of the refrigerator. There are situations when the refrigerator is absolutely working, but the machine works. Why is this happening?

Situations when the refrigerator knocks out the plugs or the machine, but there is no breakdown

  • You plug in a new refrigerator. If at this moment the lights go out in the apartment, then the problem may arise due to electrical wiring or the use of faulty network protection devices. For example, the electrical panels of old Soviet apartments were not designed for the number of electrical appliances that we use now. Typically, in this situation, each additional device can cause network congestion. When the refrigerator is plugged into the outlet, the circuit breaker cannot withstand the additional load and the protection is triggered. In order to make sure that this is the problem, you can try to turn on the refrigerator again, after first turning off the power to all other electrical appliances in the apartment. If in this situation the machine does not work, then your refrigerator is working. In this case, you need to call an electrician.
  • Simultaneous connection of several electrical appliances to the network. A running iron, boiler, electric kettle, air conditioner, or washing machine can overload the network. In this case, the machine will work and cut off power to the entire apartment. But if this has not happened before and your network can handle the load, then you should be concerned. Try unplugging any powerful electrical appliances that are running for a while and turn the refrigerator back on. If the protective shutdown does not occur, then this is the reason.
  • Faulty refrigerator plug or cord. Sometimes the breakdown may be inside the plug and not immediately visible. If you carefully disassemble the plug, you can immediately see the problem. The cord may be crushed and damaged within the insulation. Everything needs to be checked carefully and replaced if necessary.
  • The problem is in the socket. Try plugging the refrigerator into a different outlet to make sure. If the machine doesn’t go off, then everything is fine with the refrigerator.

As a rule, the reason for the machine to operate when a new refrigerator is connected to the network is not related to a malfunction of the household appliance. If you do not have a new refrigerator, but the plug, cord and socket are working properly, and the network is not overloaded, then you need to call a technician.

The most common malfunctions in which the refrigerator knocks out the plugs or the machine

  • The refrigerator compressor has failed. Here, both an interturn short circuit of the windings and a short circuit of the winding to the refrigerator body can occur. This is the most common and most likely reason in such situations. If this happens, the compressor needs to be replaced.
  • Start relay is broken. It needs to be replaced.
  • The evaporator heater is faulty (for No Frost system refrigerators). In this case, the machine does not knock out immediately, but at the moment the refrigerator enters the defrost mode. After turning on the light, the refrigerator operates normally until the next time it enters defrost, after which the machine switches off again. If this happens, the heater must be replaced.
  • Malfunction of the buttons on the control panel. Most often this happens with the unit's power button. If the button is faulty, you need to replace it.
  • Control module failure. This may occur due to accidental ingress of moisture or oxidation and burning of contacts. If the module cannot be repaired, then it needs to be replaced.
  • Damage to wiring or contacts inside the refrigerator cabinet. This may occur due to moisture or oxidation. You need to clean the contacts. If necessary, replace the wires.

As you know, the refrigerator compressor is designed for intermittent operation. It turns on only for a certain operating time. It is normal for the device to turn off. But how do you understand that the device often turns off and requires repair? Most often, a breakdown is indicated by an attempt to start the compressor: the unit emits an unusual hum, and after a few seconds it immediately calms down.

To calculate whether a device designed to compress and pump refrigerant vapor is working normally, you can resort to a mathematical method. If the compressor operates for two minutes, and then rests for the remaining 10 minutes, then the following calculations are made: 2: (2+10) = 0.166.

From the result obtained, it becomes clear that the refrigerator is faulty, since the coefficient during normal operation is 0.2 - 0.9.

How to determine a malfunction by sound?

The refrigerator may turn on and then immediately go silent if any element is not working properly. To understand the cause of the malfunction and which part of the refrigerator requires repair, you need to analyze the sound when it turns on and off.

If the device started up for a few seconds, and before shutting down a click was heard, while the motor itself was louder than usual, most likely the compressor will have to be repaired or replaced. Part of the reason why the refrigerator quickly turns off is the start-up relay through which the motor starts.

If the usual operating intervals are violated, you should pay attention to the electronic board. Often, when it breaks down, it gives incorrect signals - the refrigerator turns on, but after working for just a few seconds, it turns off.

Failures and power surges

In modern devices, although there are multiple systems that provide security from network instability, sudden and frequent changes can still affect proper operation.

To preserve expensive equipment, it is best to purchase additional protective equipment and connect the device to the network source only through them, for example, a voltage stabilizer.

Otherwise, the compressor, electronic control unit and other important parts of the refrigerator may not withstand interruptions and fail, which will entail costly repairs.

Problems with the control unit

Any household appliance that has a control board becomes vulnerable thanks to this small but very important detail. If the program is broken, then commands begin to arrive at various intervals. The motor turns on and off randomly.

The most likely cause of failure of the electronic unit is instability of the electrical network. In this case, the board must be reprogrammed or replaced. But it is better to give the right to make such repairs to a specialist, especially since he has all the equipment for accurate diagnosis.

The compressor has failed

This is the most expensive part of the refrigerator to replace and repair. The compressor performs an important function - pumping out freon in a gaseous state from the evaporator, supplying it under pressure to the condenser. The gas is compressed and cooled, condensing it to a liquid state. Through the capillary expander, the coolant again enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat.

To understand whether the compressor is working properly when the refrigerator often turns off, you need to find out the resistance of its windings - each pair of terminals.

If the winding is damaged, or an interturn short circuit occurs, the following often happens: the device turns on and continues to operate, but at an increased load. Therefore, the compressor heats up more than usual during operation.

The relay tries to facilitate the operation of the motor, and therefore operates ahead of schedule. In modern models, this part of the device is non-separable and therefore must be completely replaced.

The start-protection relay is malfunctioning

This part quite often fails due to physical wear or overheating during operation. The most harmless breakdown, which is the reason why the refrigerator turns off after a few seconds of operation. Fixing this malfunction is much cheaper than repairing the compressor itself or the control unit.

If the device turns on and immediately turns off due to the relay, you can try to repair it before replacing this part. To do this, it is worth checking the solenoid core.

Folk wisdom is inexhaustible, so some craftsmen came up with the idea of inserting a wire of the appropriate size or an ordinary metal rod from a ballpoint pen instead of a damaged core. But this method is not always effective, since modern coil models have a different structure.

The conductor in such a solenoid is in the form of a tablet. This could be the source why the refrigerator quickly turns off if it burns out.

If the equipment still stops working, it is better to call an experienced technician who will diagnose it and then make a quality repair. The specialists have the highest class components in stock, especially since they have warranties. An experienced technician will quickly figure out why the device turns on and off immediately, and will professionally eliminate the cause of the breakdown.

Why does the machine break out and what should I do?

In this article I will try to tell you the reasons for this and ways to avoid it, if possible, I will try to explain it in my own words so that it would be understandable even to people who are far from knowledge of physics and electrical engineering. And so, automatic machines are divided into several types, I’ll start with the most popular - single-pole circuit breaker (automatic).

It is a box in which dozens of mechanisms are wired together, the main task of all of them is to open the circuit in time when the permissible current values are exceeded.

Current flowing through the wires can heat them under significant loads, or when the conductors have a thin cross-section; protection against overloads and short circuits is based on this property.

The machine itself has a bimetallic plate, which heats up if the current exceeds the permissible values and opens the circuit.

Now let's talk about the reasons for the operation, for myself I have identified three main reasons - overload, or exceeding the rated current, short circuit, malfunction of the machine itself.

Let's start with overload, each device consumes some power, and it needs current, the greater the power, the greater the current; among household appliances, the most powerful consumers are usually kettles, washing machines, irons, vacuum cleaners.

The maximum current that the machine can hold is indicated on the front side; in the photo, the symbols C50, C40, C16 indicate the type of machine (letter C) and current (50 Amperes, 40 and 16, respectively). There are also types of machines B, C and D, but I won’t talk about them, because in everyday life machines of type C are used in 99% of cases.

And so, to give a simple example, there is a group of sockets protected by a C16 type circuit breaker (16 amperes), if you plug a kettle into it (approximate power 1.

5 kW or 1500 Watt, to calculate the current in a regular 220 volt network, you can use accurate calculations and find a formula on the Internet or an online calculator, or you can simply multiply by 4 and get the approximate current consumption, respectively, in our case it will be 1.

5 * 4 = 6 Amperes, add a washing machine to the kettle with approximately equal power - already 12 Amps. When you turn on a microwave, refrigerator or some other device on this line at the same time and cross the threshold of 16 Amps + a small power reserve of the machine itself, we will get the fact that at a current of 17-18 Amps it will turn off.

The second option for the operation of a circuit breaker is a short circuit , as a rule, very rarely it occurs without human influence, but sometimes it happens that in boxes, in walls, in sockets, over time the insulation cracks or heats up and melts and a short circuit occurs, but most often it occurs after drilling walls, incorrectly connecting appliances, installing sockets or switches. With the correct choice of the rated current of the machine, the probability of getting off with fear and a couple of hundred for the electrician is much higher, the machine will open the circuit, the electrician will fix the fault, check for short circuits and turn on the machine if none are found, but if the rated current is incorrectly selected, the wire in the box may burn out, switch or the switch itself will burn out and you will be left without light in several rooms or without voltage in part of the house. Not long ago there was a funny incident when, during a short circuit, the light in a cafe went out, after turning on the machine it did not appear, it turned out that the wire had burned off in the place where it was damaged about 7 years ago, when they were nailing a frame for the ceiling and slightly damaged it lived and didn’t notice it. During a short circuit, huge currents flow through the wires, they heat up the wire in a matter of seconds, and at the moment of a short circuit, the voltage sags and household appliances can fail, but this is mainly due to a long short circuit. Now, regarding the burning of the wire, when huge currents flow, the weak points of the connections become hotter than just the core of the wire, which is why they are the ones that most often burn out. Imagine a water pipe with a diameter of 2 centimeters, then a tee is cut into it, the outlets of which are about 1.5 centimeters, on which pipes of 2 centimeters are in turn put on, in the case of very strong pressure, it will be more difficult for the tee to contain it and the first thing it will do is tear it off, in our case The junction box in which one of the wires will burn off acts as a tee.

Well, the third option, the rarest, is when the machine does not keep its face value. It does not occur often and mainly with cheap manufacturers of automatic machines, when it triggers under a small load, without visible reasons, but this option is difficult to determine with the naked eye , because

It can simply short-circuit some electrical device and knock it out because of it, in this case, if you replace the machine with a higher rating, the likelihood that it will not work as expected will increase.

There was a case when a machine was knocked out in an office building, while there was no load as such at the moment it was triggered, and sometimes it was knocked out completely at night, when only the cooler was plugged into the outlet.

The reason turned out to be in the cooler, the temperature sensor failed, the cooler heated the water non-stop, and at some point the heating element became hot and shorted to the ground, thereby causing a short circuit. In this case, replacing the machine with a denomination higher than required would only aggravate the situation.
