Fencing the shower area in the bathing area is a necessity. This allows you to protect the remaining area from moisture. A curtain rod is installed in the bathroom as a reliable space delimiter. Its material and configuration can be different, and the choice depends on several criteria - the style of the room, the geometry of the bath, ease of fastening, long-term wear resistance, etc.

By shape and design
Taking into account the shape, the following types of bath rods are distinguished:
- standard;
- non-standard.
If we talk about non-standard types, then these are curved models, which are original rods, often made according to individual orders and designer sketches.
Standard bath rods are in turn divided into:
- straight - the most popular type of bath rods, the main advantages of which are their simplicity of appearance, as well as the ability to use a variety of mounting options. Often used for bathrooms of standard shapes;
- semicircular, arc - a curtain holder in the bathroom is used for standard or round shaped rooms. In order for the semicircular arc to be installed, you will need to purchase special fasteners;
- flexible - a flexible frame is ideal for a bathtub with an original shape. Thanks to the possibility of free transformation and bending, the structure can be given completely different shapes. To make a flexible frame, an aluminum profile is used;
- telescopic is a straight curtain rod for the bathroom, the design of which resembles a spyglass. Before starting installation work, the telescopic rod for curtains in the bathroom is extended to the required length and clamped;
- angular - L-shaped arc, requiring additional fixation;
- round - original models of round bath rods, which are used for baths located in the center of the room;
- expander curtain rod - a rod for curtains in the bathroom, mounted from telescopic parts connected by a spring.

Corner bar - when choosing a shape, it is necessary to take into account the shape of the bathtub, shower tray, as well as the shape and dimensions of the bathroom. Also an important factor is the material and type of curtains that are planned to be attached. Only taking into account these requirements can you decide whether a semicircular arch is suitable for you in the bathroom, or whether it will be an L-shaped crossbar.
Structurally, the rods are divided into:
- sliding and telescopic;
- tension and string.
Installation nuances
Installing curtains over the bathtub to protect the interior from splashes must take into account the design of the cornice, supporting elements, wall materials, ceiling partitions and their linings.
Installation height
The vertical level of the cornice relative to the side of the bathtub primarily depends on its design:
- ceiling - attached to a floor slab or profile specially mounted on it under a suspended or suspended ceiling;
- string and rod - must be fixed to the walls taking into account the height of the curtain, the lower 20 cm of which will be tucked inside the bowl during operation.
- L-shaped or semicircular rod - the length of the suspension at the corner of the structure should be sufficient for fixation to the ceiling, the side parts are attached to the walls.
Cornice height.
The installation height of frames with guides for curtains made of polycarbonate and glass is determined by the manufacturer and is indicated in the instructions.
By material
A variety of materials can be used for manufacturing, each of which provides the model with both a number of advantages and a number of disadvantages.
Plastic
The plastic crossbar has a number of undeniable advantages, including:
- low cost;
- availability of choice of colors and textures;
- easy to clean using plain water, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge;
- practical movement of the curtain on a plastic surface.
The disadvantages of plastic structures include:
- the ability to change the color of the rod over time;
- sagging under the weight of the curtains;
- the need for frequent cleaning due to the accumulation of dirt;
- A plastic stick looks much cheaper than similar options made from other materials.
Metal
Metal models, the material of which can be aluminum or bronze, are a more expensive and practical option, which has a number of advantages over other models:
- resistance to moisture, corrosion, temperature changes;
- lightness of construction and at the same time strength;
- ease of installation;
- durability;
- beautiful appearance that fits perfectly into any interior design.
As for the disadvantages, there are also some and they directly depend on the type of frame metal used - bronze or aluminum:
- aluminum - a stick made of this material has a surface very similar to plaque. The slightest load can lead to deformation of the structure. If you use metal rings to fasten the curtain, this will lead to excessive noise when using the curtain. That is why it is better to choose rings made of aluminum coated with plastic;
- Stainless steel is an expensive and high-quality frame that will last for many years. They are distinguished by high strength and the ability to take the desired shape. If desired, such rods can be finished in silver or gold; bronze is also often found.
Tree
Due to the fact that during manufacturing, wooden rods are impregnated with a special solution, they are not afraid of moisture and perfectly repel water. But even despite this, it is difficult to call this option durable and reliable. Most often, such models are used for original designs, where practicality is not in the first place; it is then that their spacer and installation is justified.
Combined
Recently, many have given preference to combined models that combine metal and plastic. Often this is a durable metal that is not subject to deformation, which can be bronze, coated on top with plastic or special enamel. Such rods perfectly combine all the positive qualities of both plastic and metal rods.
No less important is the color of the bar, which can be selected depending on the color scheme of the bathroom. Also, if desired, the structure can be decorated with decorative details applied with waterproof paint.
The best examples of using curtains for the bathroom: models, design, photos
Examples of the most successful use of curtains should be given (see photo). First of all, it is a plunge pool completely covered with a non-standard L-shaped curtain, and the curtain is matched to the tone of the walls of the room. If the bathroom is too small, it is recommended to use transparent glass curtains for the bathtub.
They will make the interior space visually wide and “airy”.
When using them, it is important to follow the rule: if there is enough space, buy swing glass curtains, as they have special fastenings and handles for opening.
In case of limited space, let the choice fall on the sliding option.
Curtains for the font help create a cozy, original atmosphere. Also, these accessories make certain adjustments to the overall style of the room, while simultaneously protecting the room from splashes.
A wide variety of models allows you to choose the curtain that is most suitable in size and opening method.
Manufacturers offer cotton, blended, polyester, vinyl and glass curtains. At the same time, the variety of shapes and colors is amazing.
The most convenient and durable option is a glass curtain.
Types of rings for rods
The bathroom curtains are attached to the rod using rings, which can be:
- metal;
- plastic;
- metal with plastic coating.
The least practical are plastic rings, which break quickly and can change color. As for metal rings, they are very noisy. It is best to choose combination rings that are durable and silent.
Does the quality of a device depend on the material?
What influences the material from which the cornice is made? First of all, on its operational characteristics and service life. A metal tube will “live” much longer than a plastic one, since metal is wear-resistant and resistant to mechanical damage. This is important because the hooks on which the curtain is hung constantly move along the rod and scratch it.
The only advantage of a plastic product is its low cost, so it can be easily replaced with another made of a similar material.
To make a plastic model last longer, when purchasing, pay attention to its strength, which directly depends on the diameter, wall thickness of the tube and elasticity (fragile material will deteriorate faster)
Metal models vary, but most are made from polished stainless steel, painted thin-walled steel or aluminum. The latter are good if there is a need to change the shape of the bar - aluminum bends easily.
The processed material does not rust, does not become moldy and lasts a long time. Sometimes a design project requires all accessories to be consistent, and then the curtain rod is custom-made (from nickel-plated, brass or copper tubing) to match the plumbing details and other equipment.
Tubular metal curtain rods can last for decades, but do not forget about their weak point - the brackets, which are the main fasteners to the wall, and regularly check their stability
Mounting methods
When purchasing a rod, in addition to the accessory itself, you receive a set of parts, without which fastening the structure is simply impossible. It is important to know that fastening can be done in one of several possible ways:
- to Wall;
- to the ceiling;
- universal.
Ceiling mount
Wall mount
Securing the bar yourself is not difficult at all if you follow certain instructions. To do this, you need to assemble the structure together, following the existing assembly diagram, after which you will decide on the location and make marks on the wall or ceiling, depending on the mounting method.
Using a puncher, it is easy to make holes for dowels at the marks. After this, attaching the rod to the ceiling or wall will be a snap.
Curtain options for the bathroom
The next step is to decide on the curtain material. Again, even before attaching the bathroom curtain rod yourself. Unlike curtains for living rooms, the choice here is small, but still, it is available.
Glass
The most difficult option is traditionally considered to be a corner mount for a curtain in a bathroom using classic methods:
- when the length of the sanitary fixture bowl is more than 1.5 m, the arcs sag at the corner;
- There are rod curtain rods that are suspended from the ceiling at the bend of the pipe, but it is almost impossible to move the curtains closely in this place; water penetrates outward into the gap;
Tubular curtain with a rotating part suspended from the ceiling. - in ceiling curtains, curtain hangers slide in radius elements very slowly; they can be torn by sudden movement.
Therefore, structures made of glass or monolithic polycarbonate are considered the best option for a corner bath. There are several designs for the type of movement of curtains:
- swing doors - an analogue of a classic door;
Swing glass bath curtain. - folding - like a book door;
Folding curtain made of polycarbonate. - sliding - like a wardrobe.
Polymer
The most popular are bath curtains made of polymer materials:
- PVC fabric - transparent, colored, with a pattern, rings - eyelets - are built into the upper part for hanging;
PVC curtains for the bathroom. - polyester is a completely synthetic fabric, high-quality imitation of woven textiles.
Bath linens made of polyester.
The disadvantages of vinyl curtains made of polyvinyl chloride are:
- when wet in water, the fabric sticks together;
- after drying from hard water, streaks remain on the material;
- the standard length of 1.8 m is not suitable for long bathtubs;
- the typical height of 2 m is not suitable for installation in ceiling curtains.
The advantages are the budget price, the use of fabric for sewing designer curtains.
Polyester is more expensive, does not wrinkle, does not stick to the body, is very durable, absolutely waterproof, and is not afraid of solar ultraviolet radiation. The only negative is the standard length is 2 m, which is too short for ceilings.
Textile
Curtains for bathrooms are made to order or purchased in online stores from mixed textiles. They are practically not sold in retail stores due to the high price of 5 – 15 thousand rubles per set. They are made from a mixture of polyester and cotton, linen.
Less commonly used are classic fabrics impregnated with Teflon. Upon contact with water, the impregnation is gradually washed off; the resource of such canvases is limited.
Features of fastening rods of various configurations
To install the rod, you will need special tools, including a drill, a hammer drill, a set of drills, a marking pencil, a screwdriver or a screwdriver.
Straight
Installation of the cornice occurs in several important stages:
- marking the surface to which the frame will be attached. The optimal installation height is 1.6 meters from the bathroom level. If this height is maintained, the curtain falls onto the bathtub by about 20 centimeters, which will prevent water from getting on the floor when taking water procedures;
- using a bracket it is necessary to mark the locations of future holes;
- Having chosen a suitable tool, drill holes, the depth of which should not be less than 4.5 centimeters;
- Usually the rods are supplied with plastic dowels, which are inserted into the holes so that their head extends outward by 0.5 centimeters;
- attach the brackets;
- by loosening the clamping screw, the pipe is placed in the fixed bracket;
- Now you can put on decorative caps.
Telescopic
A telescopic rod can hardly be called a reliable model, which should be abandoned if there are children in the family. An installation of this type has its own nuances:
- The mounting location should not be too low, but the distance from the ceiling surface should not be less than 15-20 centimeters. You can check the correct location using the curtain - it should calmly fall inside the bathtub;
- Using a pencil, you need to mark the places of future fastenings, making sure that the cornice is always parallel to the edge of the bathtub;
- the unpacked frame must be expanded to the required length, adding about 0.5-1 centimeter;
- Having placed the rings or hooks on the frame, the structure must be installed in the marked place, after which it is worth checking the reliability of the installation.
Corner
Corner structures are often longer than others, and therefore require more reliable fastening. A steel rod will require additional fixation of the corners, which is due to the sufficient weight of the structure. In this case, we apply the hanging method, when a fastening ring is installed on the frame to fix the corner to the ceiling. Whether it is bronze or plastic, otherwise the installation of such a rod is not much different from the mounting option for the usual straight model.
Semicircular
The semicircular rod is considered a non-standard option, and therefore some problems may arise during its installation if certain rules are not followed. Make sure that the system retreats a couple of centimeters from the edge of the bathtub, and the type of frame must match the material of the selected curtains. If installation is to be done on tiles, then it is better to entrust this work to specialists.
Otherwise, the installation process is not much different from installing a regular straight rod. The only advice is that at least two people should participate in the installation, which will greatly facilitate the process and avoid injury.
Rod with flanges
A similar curtain rod is attached to the bathroom using self-tapping screws and dowels, which it usually comes with. First, on the surface, it is necessary to mark two places for attaching the flanges, the distance between which should be the length of the curtain rod.
To calculate the height of the rod, you need to subtract 20 centimeters from the length of the curtain.
Flanges are used for fastening.
Having marked the fastening points, you need to remove the flange and make three holes using a hammer drill. After inserting the dowels, the flange is screwed on with self-tapping screws. Such manipulations need to be carried out on both sides of the curtain rod for the bathroom.

How to make the right choice
When choosing rods for curtains in the bathroom, remember that it should not only be attractive in appearance, but also practical and lightweight. For example, if you do not like extraneous noise, then in this case give preference to the plastic option, since the movement of the rings along the metal rod will create additional sounds. To prevent this from happening, it is best to choose metal rings with an additional plastic coating to attach the curtains to the rod.
The minimum service life will be ensured by telescopic rods with vacuum pressure to the surface. This design can break from the slightest careless movement or sudden opening of the curtains. The material used is very important. Not all rods are able to withstand heavy curtain models without deformation; this is important to remember when choosing.
If the rod is long, you cannot do without ceiling or wall fastenings, which, if desired, can be turned into room decor. When choosing a curtain rod, you need to pay attention to some nuances:
- the connection of parts should occur without much effort;
- Each structural element must be intact, without chips or defects. The coating of the rod must also be of high quality;
- all fastenings must be made of moisture-resistant materials.

Features of glass partitions
Bathroom curtains made of durable glass have a large number of advantages when used, some of them are:
- They give the bathroom interior a sophisticated and modern look.
- Easy to wash and care.
- The appearance of fungus is practically excluded.
- It is possible to purchase any size and shape.
- High durability up to 15 years of use.
- They are inexpensive.
- Large selection of sizes and shapes.
These and many other advantages are offered by modern bath shower glass, which is practical, reliable and can last a very long time.
Glass in the bathroom is easy to care for and can be easily washed, which is very convenient and practical. Glass is the best option for modern apartments, because it adds individuality to any room.
Important Features
To disguise the space under the bathtub, it is recommended to take ready-made bathtub screens, or screens made independently. Curtains under the bathroom will be a reliable and practical method of disguising this space. There are a number of reasons for this:
- firstly, bath curtains are well suited for small apartments where the bathroom is small;
- secondly, the closed space can be safely used as storage for detergents or personal hygiene items;
- thirdly, bath screens will not complicate repair work due to their compactness.
Manufacturers offer several options for bath screens, made from various materials. The main requirement for the manufacturing material is moisture resistance; hydrophilic textile fabrics are not suitable because they absorb water, which will lead to the formation of fungus, mold and unpleasant odor. It is recommended to choose a bath curtain from the following materials:
- polyethylene, is cheap and accessible. It comes in a variety of colors or designs. Its disadvantage is its short service life;
- polyvinyl chloride, a popular and practical material. Caring for it is simple, and the variety of colors and patterns allows you to realize the most unusual fantasies in interior design;
- vinyl is a good synthetic material, characterized by high wear resistance and ease of maintenance.
It is worth noting that any image can be easily applied to vinyl, and the print is not exposed to moisture. This allows you to decorate your bathroom in the same style. This method is used to decorate not only the bathroom screen, but also the bathroom curtain.
As mentioned above, a bath curtain can be made of various materials, and all of them must have the following properties:
- moisture resistance – curtains under the bathtub are not afraid of high humidity and direct ingress of water;
- strength - bath curtains made of PVC are much more resistant to mechanical stress, which cannot be said about polyester;
- light resistance - if the bathroom is located in a private house, then most likely this room is equipped with a window, and exposure to sunlight cannot be avoided. Bath screens made of vinyl are not resistant to fading;
- configuration - the fastening of the products depends on where the bathroom is installed. For not quite standard and round bathtubs, it is necessary to purchase metal fastener structures.
How to make it yourself
A DIY bath curtain can be:
- regular;
- decorated with frill.
To sew curtains you will need:
- waterproof material;
- roulette;
- scissors;
- cornice or wire;
- sewing machine.
Sewing steps:
- The first thing to do is determine the size of our curtain. To do this, you need to take appropriate measurements of the lower space and cut the required section. Taking into account seam allowances. The edges of the curtains must be machine stitched. If you make a curtain without tensioning the material, but with waves, then the measured length needs to be increased by 1.5-2 times;
We take measurements
Cut off the required amount of fabric
- Loops must be sewn along the top edge of the curtain, and their size is calculated based on the fastening method. If the product will be mounted on a cornice, then the size of the loops should be large enough. If wire is used for fastening, the loops can be made very small;
Hem the edges and sew on the loops
- the next stage involves attaching the curtain rod under the bathtub or tensioning the wire, and you must not forget to tighten the screws in the walls to secure the wire. In addition to these methods, you can try attaching a curtain with Velcro, which is glued to the bathroom with a glue gun. Sew Velcro to the curtain itself;
All seams are machine sewn
- All that remains is to hang the made curtain in place. If this is a string fastener, then the wire must be threaded through the prepared loops and secured to the prepared screws.
Curtain fastening
The second option is rather aesthetic, but, nevertheless, it takes place.
To make frills you will need:
- polyester or other material;
- scissors;
- sewing machine;
- safety pins;
- pencil;
- ruler.
Stages of work:
- On the finished curtain you need to mark where our frill will be sewn. The width of the stripes and their number must be determined based on your preferences;
- cut out the required number of strips, but taking into account that the frills will be gathered. Therefore, they should be slightly longer than the curtain itself;
- the finished stripes must be attached to the curtain and stitched;
- if there are several such frills, then they are sewn on the front side, starting from the bottom row.
If desired, the finished curtain can be decorated with applique elements or decoupage.
