How to measure an opening

If the door is replaced without replacing the floor covering, raising/lowering the floor level, and also if there is confidence that the old doors are installed correctly, then only the door leaf is measured and a block with the same dimensions is ordered.

But the practice of replacing doors in old housing stock shows that relying on simple measurements of the old door leaf is not reliable: situations occur when unscrupulous builders or installers install a smaller frame in an opening that is 10 or even more centimeters wider. Therefore, it is recommended to remove the canvas from the hinges and trims, and dismantle the box. After this, all building materials placed between the frame and the wall (spray foam, gypsum mortar, plaster) are removed until the building structure is exposed. When the opening is completely cleared, its height, width and depth (wall thickness) are measured. In this case, the height and width are measured at three points, and the depth at six (three on each side).

When obtaining different values when measuring height and width, the smaller number is taken as the final value, and when measuring depth, the larger number is taken, provided that the doorway is vertically level.
