Soft handmade bath and toilet mats
Tiled bathroom floors are a classic. This type of finishing is practical, durable, aesthetic, but sometimes not safe. When leaving the bathroom, you can accidentally slip on the wet, smooth floor and get injured. And not everyone enjoys touching cold tiles with bare feet. To avoid this, the floor is traditionally covered with a rug. Don’t rush to spend money and buy a finished product in a store.
You can make a beautiful, practical bath mat with your own hands. A simple hand made accessory will help create a comfortable, cozy environment in the bathroom. Original creative ideas and advice from experienced needlewomen will help you create a stylish and comfortable rug.
From packages
A bathroom rug made from plastic bags has many advantages: products made from recycled materials save the family budget and have a positive impact on the environment. This rug will last a long time, since the material from which it is made does not absorb moisture. Garbage bags come in different shades, which means your bathroom rug will delight you with its variety of colors.

Materials and tools
To work you will need:
- Plastic bags.
- Hook of the required size (depending on the thickness of the yarn).
- Scissors.
Step-by-step instruction
First, let's make the yarn:
- Fold the bag like an accordion, cut off the handles and the bottom.
- We cut the workpiece into pieces, making equal indentations of approximately 3 cm, to obtain large rings.
- We tie the edges of the rings with a knot and twist skeins of yarn from the double “thread”.
- We tie a double thread on the hook without tightening.
- We pull the thread through the hole and get a loop through which we pull the thread again. These steps must be repeated to form a short chain. Insert the hook into the first hole, tighten the thread and get a round base for the rug.
- We thread the hook into the nearest hole and pull out the “yarn”. Two loops appear on the hook through which we pull the thread. One loop is formed again. According to this scheme, we increase the circle, not forgetting to make increases for each row.
- To change the color, untie the knot of polyethylene yarn, tighten a thread of a new color into the ring and continue knitting until the product reaches the desired size.
From towels
The next master class will teach you how to decorate a bathroom or toilet with a useful and cozy accessory without any expenses. You can easily make a soft bath mat with your own hands from old towels.
The photo shows a fluffy homemade rug made from unnecessary towels.
Materials and tools
You will need:
- Several terry towels.
- Scissors.
- Threads, needle, pins.
Step-by-step instruction
Let's get started:
- We take towels (if these are large bath towels, then 3 pieces will be enough) and cut them into long strips about 7 centimeters wide.
- Sew strips of the same colors. Then you need to weave a pigtail from three long strips.
- To keep the braid straight, secure it with pins and thread. Carefully twist the braid in a spiral, imperceptibly stitching the joints on the wrong side. The rug is ready!
Children's variations
Children prefer their own rooms with appropriate furnishings - everything should be bright and fabulous. Therefore, the task of parents is to take into account every little detail. If you previously did not take care of purchasing furniture or textiles for the children's room with appropriate prints, then today you can easily correct the situation:
- First, buy curtains with a child's pattern for your child's room.
- Secondly, replace the existing dark blanket on the bed with a bright children's option.
- Third, tie the rug! But not a simple one, but a special one - in the form of an animal.
Do you think knitting rugs in the shape of animals is a difficult task? Not at all - here only circles, ovals, squares, hexagons, rectangles and other individually connected figures are correctly assembled into a single composition
For example, you can see how to knit a simple rug in the shape of a bear:
- tie the bear's face - a simple circle of a suitable size in a gray shade;
- bear ears - 2 semicircles of white and gray;
- the bear's nose is a white circle, and the triangle is cut out of black suede (later it will be sewn on);
- bear cheeks – 2 circles of pink shade;
- eyelashes - 2 suede parts, which are also later sewn on in the designated places.
The rest of the children's rugs are knitted using the same principle - use your imagination and don't look for complications in the patterns! Everything ingenious is simple!
Cork mat
If there are a lot of wine or champagne corks in the house, you can make a natural and practical rug that will decorate the bathroom. Cork is an excellent material for a damp room, as it is resistant not only to water, but also to various microorganisms.
The photo shows a rug made from wine corks, which you can save yourself or purchase on the Internet.
What will you need?
To work you need:
- About 170 bottle caps.
- Universal glue.
- Rubber mat for base.
- Knife and cutting board.
How to do it yourself?
Let's start making:
- We remove dirt and traces of wine by soaking bottle caps in white for several hours. Wash well and dry.
- Using a board and knife, cut each cork in half.
- Before fixing the plugs, it is advisable to lay them out on the base to make sure there is enough material. We start gluing the corks from the edges, but the layout can be any: diagonal, alternating, patterned or just straight.
- To provide additional protection from moisture, we treat the finished product with a sealant. Before using the cork mat, let it dry.
Which option is better to choose?
When choosing such products, you need to pay attention not only to external beauty, but also to functional features.
It is important to take into account the anti-slip properties and ease of use. Today, almost all types of toilet and bathroom mats are equipped with a special coating that prevents them from slipping
Today, almost all types of toilet and bathroom mats are equipped with a special coating that prevents them from slipping.
Such products may have suction cups, which ensure safety when it lies on a wet floor and you step on it. It will not budge because it is securely fixed to the base of the floor, so the risk of slipping and falling is minimal.
When choosing children's carpets, you should consider safety; it is important that they are not slippery. Here, too, it is better to opt for rugs that are equipped with suction cups; they will not allow them to slide while the child is taking water treatments.
As for the design and shapes, it’s a matter of everyone’s taste, because children’s products are presented in an assortment, and you can easily choose the version of the accessory that your baby wants. There are rugs in the shape of fish, balls, animals and so on. They are bright and colorful, which will arouse the child's interest and turn the bathing procedure into a fun game.
Children's bath mats and more
If you love warmth and comfort, then pay attention to carpets for the toilet and bathroom, which are equipped with a heating system. The safety of such products is guaranteed because heat is provided using flexible electric heating systems placed inside the mat, which are located in a moisture-proof cover, which eliminates the risk of electric shock
Such products can become an alternative to heated floors, while the cost is several times lower.
Heated mat
And now about the design. If you decide to equip a bathroom, you need to take into account a large number of details that will be needed during operation. The same applies to finishing options, choice of furniture and plumbing fixtures, accessories and lighting fixtures.
Along with engineering solutions, one must not forget about the correct design; this is the only way to create truly comfortable conditions in the toilet or bathroom. But the last stage of the arrangement will be the floor mats; they will add the finishing touches to the interior.

From pompoms
A very popular and budget-friendly way to make a bath mat with your own hands is to knit it from pompoms.
The photo shows a fluffy carpet made of pompoms, which you can make with your own hands.
What will you need?
Necessary materials:
- Knitting.
- Rubberized mesh.
- Scissors.
How to do it yourself?
Let's get started:
- We wind the threads around our fingers, remove the resulting voluminous ring and tie it with thread of the same color. Cut the threads as shown in the photo:
- The amount of material depends on the desired size of the product. We tie each pompom to one side of the net. We cut off the ends of the threads.
- The closer the pompoms are to each other, the denser and more voluminous the rug will be. You can use different colors and sizes of blanks, then the product will look brighter and more interesting.
From old things
When tidying up your closet, don’t throw away clothes that have served their purpose – jeans and T-shirts. They are useful for creating a rug that can be placed in the bathroom or shower.
The photo shows an elegant oval-shaped rug made from old clothes.
Materials and tools
To work you will need:
- Cotton T-shirts.
- Scissors.
- Sewing machine.
- Needle for knitwear.
How to do it yourself?
Let's start creating a practical decoration for the bathroom:
- Making yarn from a T-shirt. To do this, cut it as shown in the photo. First we remove the top and bottom parts, then we make cuts without reaching the edge of the canvas. Cut the remaining part diagonally and get a continuous thread:
- We make a long braid of three threads, sewing it on both edges.
- We measure the length of the product and wrap the braid clockwise.
- We sew the braids with a zigzag. At the beginning of the braid, make a fold under the next layer and turn it again. Sew it together.
- In this way we increase the rug to the required diameter.
Photos of unusual rugs
By using your imagination and arming yourself with patience, you can create original and aesthetic bathroom accessories with your own hands. Suitable materials include stabilized moss, multi-colored fabric using the patchwork technique, and wooden slats.
The photo shows a magnificent moss rug that will give you pleasant tactile sensations and a feeling of unity with nature.
Homemade rugs will perfectly fit the interior of an apartment in marine, Scandinavian and eco-style, as well as country and Provence.

The tiles on the bathroom floor can be cold and slippery, but this can be easily corrected with a homemade rug, because DIY crafts bring coziness and warmth to your home design.
For experienced craftswomen
Experienced craftswomen can choose to crochet more complex patterns and variations, where most techniques use stitches that are difficult to knit. It is also worth noting the compatibility of complex patterns - pineapples are combined with cones, and cones with floral motifs, and so on. But you should still present several models for crocheting rugs yourself.
Rug based on the "Grand" napkin
You can easily make carpets from crocheted napkin patterns, and here, if necessary, you can increase the size of the future canvas by combining or “wedging” several rows with certain patterns. So the “Pineapple Song” napkin prompted experienced craftswomen to knit based on the existing pattern of the rug, called “Grand”. The new model fits perfectly into the interior design of Provence, Rococo, Baroque, Classicism, the more luxurious Gothic or Empire style. There is nothing complicated in knitting it - the main thing is to use the given patterns with descriptions:
- Cast on 8 chain stitches and close the chain into a ring. Next, continue knitting according to pattern 1. If necessary, you can increase the diameter by repeating the last few rows.
- Next, move on to knitting pattern 2 - here you can also increase the size of the carpet by adding a third row of petals above the pineapples.
- When finished, go to diagram 3 - this will allow you to finish the carpet smoothly and texturedly.
- For edging, pattern 4 is used, consisting of air loops and picot.
The presented model is recommended for independent execution in white, but if necessary, more attractive shades of thread that suit the color scheme of the room are also taken into account. The finished rug is simply soaked in cool water and laid out on a cloth - you can immediately lay it on the floor until completely dry
Pineapple openwork
Next, the rug in question becomes convenient for implementation by those craftswomen who cannot independently enlarge the diagrams to the required dimensions of the canvas. An openwork rug with additional pineapples can be knitted in two ways.
The first method involves starting knitting immediately according to pattern 2, where the required number of air loops is cast, but taking into account the proposed rapport. Further knitting is carried out according to the pattern without deviations.
The second method involves increasing the size of the rug - they begin to knit according to pattern 1 by the required amount, and only then move on to pattern 2, presented above. It turns out that openwork “fans” from a chain of air loops smoothly transition to double crochets in the middle part. In this way, you can “adjust” the dimensions of the finished canvas.
Simple but attractive blue lace
An openwork rug can be knitted using a simpler pattern - here it is only important to correctly arrange the petals from ordinary double crochets. So, it is proposed to use the following diagram, which will help to create a very attractive and versatile crochet rug model - change the shade, and you will get a completely different version of the fabric
Rugs from bags
Rugs from bags are knitted using the same technique as from T-shirts and knitted fabrics. Here you will also need to cut long strips from bags and use a simpler pattern for crocheting a rug. It is not recommended to use an openwork pattern, because the joints of packet threads may become accessible to the public.
Of course, rugs made from bags are not used everywhere - they can be laid in the countryside, since such use will eliminate the hassle of cleaning the room from dirt and garden soil. But skilled needlewomen easily use bundled threads to knit a rug for the hallway of an apartment - it’s both convenient and stylish.
