Why does the faucet hum when you turn on the water: causes and ways to eliminate the noise + video repair instructions

Due to excessive load, poor quality of tap water and “makeshift” installation, plumbing fixtures and products tend to fail sooner or later. Some breakdowns appear immediately clearly and openly, for example, through leaks. Other faults may not manifest themselves for a long time or may cause only slight discomfort when using plumbing fixtures.

When the faucet in the bathroom is humming, many homeowners do not pay enough attention to this problem, considering it just an annoying inconvenience that can be tolerated. However, this defect in the plumbing system cannot be left to chance, as it can be a signal of much bigger troubles.

Diagnosis of the problem

The reason for the hum in the pipes is turbulence of the flow, which appeared due to a leak in the connections of the plumbing elements. Leaks that occur in shut-off valves change the cross-sectional area of free passage inside the pipe space. This is how vortices appear that hum.

Air leaks due to leaks cause a series of hydraulic shocks, which cause vibration of the pipes. It often accompanies annoying sounds similar to a honking train.

What to do to stop the faucet from humming

To determine the type of faucet axlebox of a valve mixer, you need to pay attention to the following. If the mixer valve only turns half a turn, it contains a ceramic element

If you need to turn the valve several times to turn on the water, the mixer has a regular axle box with a rubber gasket. To eliminate noise in a conventional axle tap, you must first completely shut off the water supply. Then you need to remove the valve from the axle box; to do this, unscrew a special bolt. After this, the crane box is carefully unscrewed. A gasket that has become unusable must be replaced with a new one.

The cause of noise in a faucet with a ceramic liner is the silicone washer. It is used to “press” ceramic rings in the correct position. In this case, it is better to replace the ceramic liner with a new one. Noise in a lever mixer most often appears due to pressure drops in the pipes. To normalize it, you need to install a special reducer on the water supply system, which allows you to control the pressure level. This device limits the pressure to 2.5 atmospheres, after which the noise in the pipes stops.

  • Causes of the problem
  • Water pressure
  • Faucet repair
  • Rubber gasket
  • Ceramic gasket

Many have encountered the phenomenon of a hot water faucet humming. It is almost impossible to give an exact answer as to why it occurs. This can be influenced by various factors. Any reason can be justified from the point of view of acoustics and hydrodynamics. Once you find out the cause of the problem, you can fix the problem.

If your faucet is humming, then immediately, in order to save money and save nerves, it is necessary to eliminate the cause.

Main causes of noise

All of these symptoms of “disease” in your home water supply system appear due to faulty plumbing. The reasons for buzzing and leaks are identical for all cases. As a rule, these are water quality and wear of sealing elements. I would like to dwell on the reasons why the faucet hums in more detail.

Why do the pipes hum when you turn on the tap?

The water supply valve is designed in such a way that the cross-section for the free passage of liquid through it is blocked by a valve with a seal at the connection point. The gaskets are made of elastic rubber to prevent leakage.

Nothing lasts forever in nature, and gaskets periodically fail. They are pressed through the metal body of the valve. Under the influence of time, rubber becomes rougher, loses elasticity, and the tightness is broken.

As a result, a loose gasket no longer holds the liquid pressure. The flow entering under pressure enters a leak and turbulence occurs, which is accompanied by an unpleasant whistle or causes the faucet to hum. Don't be alarmed, it's easy and cheap to repair.

It also hums if cold water is forced under pressure into the hot water supply pipeline. This happens when the hot water boiler is stopped for repairs or due to the departure of the owners and, out of forgetfulness, they forget to close the shut-off valve that shuts off the boiler. Cold water in the mixer enters the DHW pipeline. The valve begins to hum due to vibration.

Calcium dissolved in tap water forms limescale deposits. They accumulate on the walls and create unevenness in the internal cross-sectional area of the pipe. This could be another reason for humming pipes.

Why does the toilet tank make noise when filling with water?

The noise in the toilet after using the toilet is familiar to all readers. This is the sound we get used to. But the hum of the tank is quite noisy and wakes up the inhabitants of the home if one of the family members had to get up at night.

There is an option with bottom supply, in which case the water does not hum. The loud sound is annoying if you have a toilet with a top water supply to the tank. This problem can be easily fixed using a rubber tube approximately 30 centimeters long.

The tube is pulled onto the supply fitting. Its other end lies at the bottom. Water from the fitting passes freely through the tube, spreads throughout the tank without hitting the bottom and practically does not buzz.

Poor or poorly done repairs

When figuring out when you turn on the water, you first need to remember whether you have had your plumbing equipment repaired recently. If the answer is no, and the noise is repeated, then you need to find out if one of the neighbors has recently carried out any work. Additionally, you can call the service organization (housing and communal services), perhaps the plumbers, working in the basement, did a poor job of connecting the elements.

If you find out that such actions took place, then this may well be the reason why the faucet hums when you turn on the water. However, everything can be fixed. Eliminating the humming is not difficult. Poorly fastened pipes are fixed, and the hum goes away instantly. However, this may not be the only issue. If inexperienced plumbers place pipes very close, vibration will inevitably occur. In this case, there is nothing left to do but wrap each of them with foam insulation.

Ways to solve the problem

Guaranteeing the good condition of the water supply system is a competent hydraulic calculation. Only on its basis can you correctly determine the diameter and material of pipes for communications.

The most radical solution to the problem that causes the system to hum loudly is to replace all old pipes and devices, including taps, with new ones in your apartment. But it is not a fact that it will bring results if the pipeline in the entrance or house is also faulty. It is necessary to determine where exactly the reason why the pipes are humming is located. Often these are valves and mixers.

DIY valve repair or replacement

Valve valve design features often become a source of problems. The use of ball valves instead of valve-type shut-off valves eliminates the need for frequent maintenance and replacement of gaskets. In new buildings, ball valves are immediately installed, and there the buzzing is much less frequent.

They are simpler and more efficient, although if they fail, they are practically beyond repair. This is not significant, because the cost of ball valves for apartment water supply is small. But if you still have a valve at home at the water inlet to the system, then repairing it yourself is cheaper than replacing it.

To do this, you need to block the access of water to the riser (if the house is multi-apartment). Try to unscrew the valve axle (sometimes called axle box). If the thread is stuck, it will not be easy to unscrew it. In this case, the valve body is heated with a gas burner, the axlebox is unscrewed and repaired.

Inside the apartment, locking devices operate on a similar principle, with only a slight difference. There are faucets in the bathroom and kitchen that we interact with every day. They fail more often than shut-off devices on the external pipeline. By design, they come with a rubber or ceramic seal.

  • Crane axle box with rubber

To repair the mixer, you need to find out which part, when turned on, is the reason for the loud hum in the apartment. There are two options - this part is located either on a cold pipeline or on a hot one. Further:

  1. Shut off the water supply to the mixer.
  2. Unscrew the failed valve axle.
  3. Inspect the condition of the rubber and the seat in the mixer body.
  4. Replace the gasket on the valve.
  5. Screw the valve axle back into the housing.
  6. Check the tightness with a test water supply.

Some plumbers simply cut a bevel on the gasket at an angle of 45°, approximately 1 mm. Sometimes these simple actions are enough: the pipe no longer hums.

  • Crane axle box with ceramics

If the faucet axle boxes of your mixer have a ceramic seal, then the cause of the noise may be a sagging silicone washer that compresses the ceramic structural elements together. In this case:

  1. Shut off the water supply.
  2. Unscrew the valve axle.
  3. Inspect the condition of the silicone seal.
  4. If the washer subsides, cover its surface with plastic.
  5. Screw the valve axle into the housing.
  6. Check the tightness by running a test run of water.

Repairing ceramic crane axle boxes is an ineffective measure. If a part fails, it is better to replace it immediately.

in system

And we continue to talk about why the faucet hums when you turn on the water. One reason may be excess blood pressure. You can determine it by the water pressure; it is usually very good, and when the tap is fully opened, the stream bursts out with noise and hissing. There is another way to carry out diagnostics. A humming noise may occur if you open the tap quickly. In this case, you need to devote time to this problem, or even better, call a plumber so that he can assess the situation.

Why is this phenomenon dangerous? Because it can lead to depressurization of the system. Moreover, you will not be able to reduce the pressure on your own, so you will have to come up with something else. To reduce the load, you will need to install an air chamber. It is this that will dissipate the pressure, as a result of which the hum will stop and you will be able to breathe freely.

Other faucet malfunctions

The quality of modern faucets depends on the manufacturer and the materials from which they are made. As a rule, there are cheap models with a short service life. They say about these “put it in and throw it away”; an unsuccessful purchase begins to hum and leak after three months. But even high-quality and expensive faucets develop malfunctions over time.

Leaking from under the nut

Often, when installing a faucet axle box, in case of insufficient or excessive tightening of the threaded connection, the tightness of the rubber seal is broken and a leak occurs. To fix this problem, you can dismantle the part and replace the rubber band.

You can also wrap several layers of special elastic tape around the thread before screwing it into the body. It is inexpensive and sold at any plumbing store. However, this problem is not the reason that the system is humming.

The lever is leaking

The single-lever faucet design has gained popularity. It is easy to use and looks beautiful in the interior. The device of this type is not much more complicated than a traditional mixer. With it, the pipe practically does not hum, and it is easier to find out the cause of the malfunction. The main working element in such a mixer is the cartridge. If you see a water leak under the lever, then that is where the problem lies.

Use a screwdriver to remove the lever; to do this, unscrew the fixing screw that secures the cartridge and lever together. The clamping nut is unscrewed, the cartridge is replaced and reassembled in the reverse order. The mixer is ready for use again. Cartridges of any type are sold in plumbing stores.

Shower switch leaking

A bathroom faucet differs from a kitchen faucet in that it provides the ability to switch the direction of water flow. With the help of a switch we use the shower or wash our hands in the sink. But it is this switch that is sometimes the cause of the malfunction. Depending on the type, switches are:

  • Spool valves.
  • Push-button.
  • Cork type.

All types usually have one common cause of failure - seals. What to do? The solution to this problem is to replace the worn sealing product. As before, you need to turn off the water supply, remove the switch and change the gasket. Nothing complicated.

Mixer valve leaking

There is a leak through the faucet housing of the mixer. This means that it has already served its purpose and requires replacement. It makes no sense to try to eliminate such a malfunction by violating the integrity of the part. Just buy a new crane axle box and replace the faulty one.

Shower hose leaking

The shower hose is located in the shell of the metal hose. The most common cause of hose leakage is a leaky diffuser. In this case, you need to tighten the connecting nut more tightly. If water flows from a metal hose, most likely the hose has burst due to poor-quality material and low elasticity of the tube inside the hose.

You can fix this yourself by using a fitting, onto which the ends of the tube are stretched at the rupture site. Then they must be pressed to the fitting with clamps. The video shows how this is done.

This review provided a brief analysis of problematic situations with plumbing in your home. I hope it was helpful. As you can see, there is nothing super complicated in the world of faucets and toilets. Knowing the design features, it is easy to cope with minor repairs on your own. Just change the gasket and the pipe will stop humming. The main thing is not to be scared or afraid. Believe in your strength!

Toilet cistern

The toilet tank is another reason for unnecessary noise in the apartment, let's devote time to it too. Usually, when assembling a drain structure, a tube is placed on the inlet valve, which at one end descends almost to the bottom of the tank. When the water in the tank begins to fill and the tube closes, the noise disappears.

The reasons are as follows:

  • the tube fell off;
  • It was not installed during assembly for some reason.

How to fix the situation:

  1. Just put the tube back in place if it falls off.
  2. For the second reason, you need to select a suitable piece of plastic or rubber tube and install it in the drain tank.

In this article, we examined the main causes of extraneous noise from plumbing fixtures. You can safely carry out all the repairs yourself, or you can call specialists in the plumbing field, they should do everything perfectly. Since the pipeline is not the last cause of floods, you should not forget about it, because from time to time its parts wear out and need to be replaced. Don’t skimp on such things, because if something irreparable happens, it will be too late to think. You will have to shell out much larger sums for major repairs, perhaps not only of the bathtub, not just of yours.

Residents of apartment buildings know firsthand about this phenomenon. Sometimes it is a barely audible hum, and sometimes it can be felt throughout the entire riser or house. Today we want to talk about why the faucet hums when you turn on the water. At first glance, this is not a very serious problem, but sometimes it causes some inconvenience. Let's figure out why this problem occurs and what methods exist to combat it. There are many theories that explain why pipes hum. In practice, plumbers identify four main reasons that cause this phenomenon.

Determining the pressure level

To understand the cause of the flaw, since it could be high pressure, do a small test: open the tap and close the tap - that's all you need to do.

You may have heard a humming sound after closing a cold tap, which means high pressure. What to do if the cold water tap is humming, you will find out below.

Solving the problem is not very difficult: you need to install a special air chamber on the pipe, in front of the tap. It will absorb sudden pressure surges in the pipe.

Chamber operation: the air inside the chamber is compressed and softens the blow when the tap is closed. There are two ways to install the camera:

  • using a special additional pipe section;
  • using a special muffler for the humming faucet.

Repair of locking devices with rubber gasket

All work consists of several stages.

.

A humming or buzzing sound coming from an outlet or switch usually means the wire has run out of power. If this is the case, the switch or outlet may feel warm to the touch, although this is not necessarily the case. Loose wire is a fire hazard, so call an electrician right away to have the humming or buzzing noise checked.

Humming or buzzing noises from light fixtures can also indicate a simple wire problem, but with lights there's a good chance that something else is to blame. If the buzzing light is on the dimmer switch, replace the bulb with a different type of bulb or one made by a different company. Some lamps indicate on their packaging that they are designed to work with dimmers. If this does not stop the sound, replace the dimmer. If the fluorescent lamp is noisy, the fixture's "ballast" may need to be replaced.

  1. Shut off the water supply to the apartment.
  2. The faucet axle box is unscrewed from the mixer.

For a complete repair, it is advisable to completely unscrew it.

Crane axle device

To do this, the tap must be disassembled.

  1. Remove the protective cap from the lamb.
  2. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the locking bolt.
  3. Using adjustable wrenches, unscrew the valve axle.

Assess the condition of the gasket

.

Scratches or tears from inside the wall or ceiling. You may be able to guess what this means: a rodent has entered your home. Get it out as soon as possible. Or buy and set traps - avoid poisons that could be consumed by your pets or cause pests to die and rot inside your walls.

How to troubleshoot a lever mixer

Don't just evict the pest, also look for and seal the hole it used to get into your home to prevent other animals from entering. Expanding spray sealants are an easy and effective way to fill small gaps. One place to check: if you have crawl space under your home, look at the bathtubs, and shower drains often fail to properly seal holes under drains.

If the rubber is still soft, then cut the edges along the contour with scissors at an angle of 45°. If the gasket is “stiff”, replace it with a new one. It is also advisable to trim the edges of the new gasket at the same angle.

Reassembly is done almost the same way. Fum tape (or tow) is wound onto the threaded connection of the tap and the part is screwed into place.

Drops. A water leak inside a wall can destroy the wall panel and insulation and lead to mold or mildew problems. Fortunately, not every sound of water signals a problem—sometimes the water is safe inside the pipes. First, check the basement or crawl space underneath the area where you hear the sound of water. If there is a water leak, that water will likely find its way there. If you see water or water damage, call a plumber immediately. If you do not find water under the dripping sound, but the alarming water sound persists, perform a water loss test.

The water supply to the water pipes is opened and the operation of the tap is checked. If the water flows normally and there is no more noise, it means the job was completed successfully.

Clogged pipes

Why does the faucet hum when it is closed? This can be caused by clogged water paths in the system. The liquid that remains in the pipes under pressure even when the tap is closed passes through the clogged areas, causing a rather unpleasant noise.

A decrease in the internal diameter of pipes is known as “pipeline infarction.” The phenomenon occurs in houses in which no maintenance or repair of capital engineering systems has been carried out for a long time. The inside of the pipes becomes overgrown with rust, salts, and all kinds of debris accumulate here. In the most difficult cases, to eliminate the problem, they resort to installing new metal pipes or installing plastic connections.

How to determine that the cause of uncomfortable sounds lies precisely in the presence of blockages inside the pipes? To diagnose a blockage, you need to dismantle any section of the water supply and look inside. The presence of plaque and dirt on the walls of the pipes will confirm the guesses.

It is also possible to flush pipes using mechanical or hydraulic flushing. In the first case, it is worth draining the water from the problem area and using a thick wire with a metal brush attached to the end. To hydraulically flush the system, they use a powerful circulation pump, which is capable of quickly driving water through pipes under high pressure.

Replacing the gasket will not always eliminate such noise and roaring. Since this happens not only due to a worn-out gasket, but also due to the loosening of the very fastening of this gasket on the screw of the crankshaft. So it’s better to change the entire axle box at once - they are not that expensive

342:

change the gasket.

If your tap is CLOSED, but the sound is still heard, then it’s not yours that’s humming, but your neighbors’. And when you open it, the water pressure decreases, so it stops humming. So you need to punch your neighbors in the face/change their faucet. Sorry. My upstairs neighbor, a lonely teacher, had a buzzing noise for almost six months until she got around to calling a plumber.

Eugene:

won't break through. Usually it buzzes if the gaskets are leaking or the fastening of this gasket itself is loose, close it tightly and call a plumber tomorrow Victoria Ostafeychuk is probably right

ROSYURI:

What's the question? Replace it and that's it. Its design and hydrodynamics are poor - there are others like that. 5 minutes of work and the whole country already knows about it!

Grandfather Au:

The faucet hums and knocks due to the gasket on the axle box; if it starts to knock too much, this is already hydro shock, it can tear off the rotted thread. Replace the axle box with a ceramic one and forget about it

Changing the gasket helped us.

I confirm the words of the topicstarter - I have the same story: Ango art shower mixer. FT 200-21 with quarter-turn ceramic disc valves, periodically hums on hot water when turned off. The effect began to be observed after the tap did not work for six months and the water was turned off. Light pressure on the valve stem eliminates noise. Mixer from the Chinese economy segment, worked for several years. I suppose it hums during periods of increased water pressure, because at this time it also lets water through (leaks), although the day before I lubricated the discs with Electrolux special lubricant, I thought maybe the lubricant would eliminate the humming.

Sergey Sevastyanov:

If the ceramic faucet is buzzing, it’s easier to replace it. but if you don’t have time, etc., immediately replace it, pull a piece of cellophane over the gasket in several layers and tighten it - the noise will stop

I bet you have ceramic crane boxes. They have small holes for water to pass through. The smaller the holes, the more noise. When you open both taps, the noise is twice as loud. In the plumbing department. You can press down on the cabinet and close the taps to reduce the pressure. Less pressure means less noise. This decision is not clear

Andrey:

This is because the “skimmer” built into the mixer works especially well when mixing water of different temperatures. Turn off the slotted spoon from the network! :) It is so small, like a hangnail, that even if you disassemble the mixer you won’t be able to reach it. Remove the mixer and give it back to where you got it due to internal defects

Exceeding the upper limit of normal

Since it is not always easy to understand why a faucet is humming, it is best to seek help from professionals. For ordinary work, he will quickly assess the situation and find the right solution. Sometimes he may be powerless and will advise you to contact your water supply service provider. If water enters the system under high pressure, you will not be able to do anything about the humming on your own.

The logical question here is: what is the normal water pressure in the system? Typically this figure is 2 atm. This indicator is optimal for operating a washing machine or dishwasher. However, the upper limit is 6 atm. In this case, you need to work with the service provider until you find the optimal solution.

Faucet repair

The noise may be caused by faulty plumbing systems. It is worth noting that the main reason for the occurrence of an unpleasant sound is based on incorrect installation or a defect in an element such as the valve axle gasket. If the reason is precisely this gasket, then in addition to the annoying sound, the faucet may leak. Therefore, repair work should be carried out immediately.

It is quite possible to repair a humming faucet yourself if you follow the instructions.

If the problem is a faulty faucet, you need to determine which one it is. The malfunction can be in both cold and hot water taps. To do this, you need to alternately open and close the cold and hot water, this will make it possible to determine which tap has a problem. Before starting work, the water supply in the apartment is turned off, then the faucet is turned on. It is on this that the gasket is located, which is the source of the problems. The faucet is the main device that regulates the water supply. Such a device is most often located under the main valve that supplies water.

The likely reason why the faucet is noisy could be a ceramic faucet axle.

And this is despite the fact that many people think that it is thanks to the ceramic element that such unpleasant moments can be avoided. In this case, the humming of the faucet may not begin immediately, but after some time. This is, in particular, due to wear of the element or its incorrect installation.

To clarify what material the gasket is made of, there is no need to unscrew the valve axle. This can be determined by closing or opening the water flow. If you need to make several turns of the valve to open completely, then the gasket is installed with a rubber one. If the flow of water is blocked by one turn, then ceramics is used as the material.

Almost every adult has encountered such a phenomenon as an inexplicable noise coming from the mixer. In general, there is an explanation for everything, including the unpleasant noise from the mixer. This common phenomenon is called cavitation. Its essence is as follows: after the water leaves the mixer cartridge, there is a sharp drop in water pressure - hence the noise. However, understanding the essence of the problem does not calm the nerves and we are faced with the need to eliminate the problem of a noisy mixer. How to do it? Let's try to consider this issue in detail, and also choose an acceptable solution to the problem.

The first thing you need to do is determine under what conditions the unpleasant noise occurs. It will be necessary to finally determine its source. In other words, when you turn on cold or hot water, does the faucet start to hum? If you do not have a clear answer to this question, you can only find out by turning the cold water supply valve, and then the hot water supply valve.

Old, damaged pipes

Why it hums The regular occurrence of unpleasant sounds in the presence of an optimal level of pressure in the system and the operation of working faucets can be caused by the aging of the entire water supply system. The optimal solution to combat this problem is to replace rusty, leaking areas with new pipes. However, in some cases, this approach does not completely eliminate the problem. In such a situation, the only option is a radical replacement of all pipes along the riser. To reduce costs, it is worth joining forces with your neighbors.

The faucet should not hum

It is difficult to find a person who has not encountered a situation when the mixer begins to make strange sounds, roar and make noise during operation. This phenomenon is called cavitation and is a decrease in pressure after the water leaves the cartridge.

Types of faucets

Mixers are of the following types:

Valve. In them, the speed and temperature of the water are regulated by simple valves, under which axle-box taps are installed

If extraneous noise or leaks occur, you should pay attention to this structural element. Lever mixers. Everything in them is regulated by a lever that can move in two planes

In cartridge faucets, if extraneous sounds appear, the only way to repair is to completely replace the ceramic cartridge, which has worn out during use.

How to eliminate extraneous noise?

The easiest way is to purchase high-quality, proven plumbing fixtures - for example, buy a Teka faucet - it will last a long time and fit perfectly into the interior of the bathroom. But in some cases, for example, with a limited budget, renovation becomes an actual option.

If a mixer equipped with a faucet with a rubber gasket begins to make noise, then you need to:

  • shut off the water, preventing it from flowing into the mixer;
  • disassemble the product, removing the valves that perform a decorative function;
  • unscrew the bolts that secure the valves;
  • remove the faucet box itself, fixed in the mixer, assessing the wear of the rubber gasket installed there;
  • in most cases it will have to be replaced with a new one;
  • then the product is assembled in reverse order.

In most cases, this will be enough to get rid of extraneous noise for a long time.

If a product equipped with a ceramic axle box begins to make noise, then you need to look for the problem in the silicone washer that presses the ceramic rings. By combining them, you can adjust the intensity of water supply. In most cases, repairs are made solely by replacing a worn ceramic axlebox.

Lever mixers usually do not have such problems and are not noisy. But if extraneous sounds appear during its operation, then it is necessary to replace the cartridge and, if this does not help, normalize the pressure in the pipes. This is usually done using gearboxes - special devices installed in front of the mixer. They lower the pressure to a level of 2.5 atmospheres, after which the noise disappears forever.

How is mechanical cleaning performed?

This option is acceptable only if the blockage appears in certain sections of the pipes. To do this, the water must be turned off. This is the first condition that must be met before starting any repair work. The disconnected pipe is cleaned with a thick wire, and for better effect a brush is attached to it. If it is not possible to clean the hole (the deposits on the walls have petrified and become part of the system), then this section is cut out and replaced with a new one. And to avoid further problems, it is necessary to tightly fasten all the elements using sealed rubber gaskets

Please note that even when disassembling the structure you need to remember the location of all elements

When the shower gander switch leaks

In order to switch the water supply from the shower to the gander and back, we use a special lever. Sometimes it leaks too. What to do in this case?

As with most cases, the most likely source of the problem is a worn gasket. In order to fix the problem, you need to:

  1. Unscrew all screws and bolts from the lever (if they are missing, simply unscrew the lever from the mount).
  2. Remove the lever, remove the gasket, replace it.
  3. Place the lever back and, if there are screws, tighten them.

Ready! The switch no longer leaks.
