Design and principle of operation of a current transformer

Current transformers are structurally composed of:

  • closed magnetic circuit;
  • 2 windings (primary, secondary).

Since the resistance of the measuring devices is insignificant, it is generally accepted that all current transformers operate in a mode close to a short circuit.

This means that the geometric sum of the magnetic fluxes is equal to the difference in the fluxes generated by both windings.

Traditionally, current transformers are produced with several groups of secondary windings, one of which is intended for connecting protection devices, the others for connecting control, diagnostic and metering devices.

A load must be connected to these windings.

Its resistance is strictly regulated, since even a slight deviation from the standardized value can lead to an increase in error and, as a consequence, a decrease in the quality of measurement and non-selective operation of the relay.

The CT error is determined depending on:

  • magnetic circuit sections;
  • permeability of the material used for the production of the magnetic core;
  • the magnitude of the magnetic path.

A significant increase in load resistance in the secondary circuit generates increased voltage in the secondary circuit, which leads to insulation breakdown and, as a consequence, failure of the transformer.

The maximum load resistance value is indicated in the reference materials.
